Festive lighting has a fixed deadline, and design, manufacturing, shipping and installation all work backward from the switch-on date. A typical schedule runs concept and supplier selection in June and July, orders in August, production and testing in September, transport in October, and installation in early November; large displays are ideally planned twelve months ahead.

Starting early also improves the creative result, giving buyers time to compare proposals and avoid premium freight. Hotels that wait until autumn find the best installers already committed, leaving little room for the bespoke centrepieces that make a property memorable.

2. Designing a Coordinated Festive Look Across Every Zone

A convincing festive scheme reads as one design language repeated across the property. The lobby sets the tone with a focal tree, statement chandelier or illuminated sculpture, while garlands and wreaths carry the same palette through the restaurant, bar and staircases.

The design should follow guest movement, especially photo points near the tree. Specifiers should fix the colour temperature early, warm white around 2700K flatters traditional schemes, and a plan marking every fixture position and power source gives installers what they need.

3. What to Bespoke and What to Rent for the Season

The best strategy separates signature pieces from supporting décor. Bespoke lighting is worth commissioning for the elements that define the property, a custom chandelier, illuminated sculpture or archway, because these are photographed and reused every year, while standard garlands, wreaths and light strings are rented for less and refreshed as styles change.

Buyers should evaluate each element over several seasons: a custom centrepiece with a durable frame, certified LEDs and modular construction costs more upfront but returns value for years, while rented pieces suit one-off themes.

4. Safety Standards Behind a Professional Festive Installation

Festive displays are temporary electrical installations. Every component should carry recognised certification, such as UL 588 in North America or equivalent CE standards in Europe, with outdoor elements rated for moisture ingress, commonly IP65. Low-voltage systems, ground-fault protection, weatherproof connectors and timers limit hazards, and cables should be clipped, never stapled.

Before opening, the load should be checked against each circuit to prevent overloading, and the installation inspected and documented, including portable appliance testing where required. These steps, handled by qualified installers for high-level work, separate a welcoming display from one that creates liability.

5. Takedown, Storage and Reuse: Protecting the Investment

How a display is dismantled determines how it performs next year. Teams work from the top down and exterior to interior, beginning with roofline and façade pieces before lobby elements, and each light string is tested and inspected for frayed wires, cracked bulbs or damaged connectors, with faulty parts replaced while easy to source.

Decorations store best in clean, dry, climate-controlled conditions, with labelled crates and moisture protection in humid climates; pressure washing and strong solvents should be avoided on LED surfaces. Proper takedown extends a display’s life by three to five years, and older steel pieces can often be re-lit for a fraction of replacement cost.
